Directional Orientation The position of a house on it's plot is critically important to it’s environment and energy efficiency. Long Island homes are located in the Northern Hemisphere.
House design considerations:
The South Side of the house- Should have many windows, skylights and solar collector units as possible. The skylight is valuable in providing sunlight, radiant heat and ventilation.
West Side of the house- gets afternoon sun at low angles.
East Side of the house- receives the morning sun.

Our most direct sunlight comes from the southerly direction. 
North Side of the house- The north side of the house should have fewer windows and thicker wall insulation. Some of the worst storms that hit Long Island come from the north.
